Ipswich Life Saving Club seeks to introduce adults and children (over the age of 10) to the techniques and knowledge required to preserve ones own life and the life of others in difficulties in the water. The techniques of resuscitation, external chest compression and basic first aid are also taught. The club does this through a progressive training programme that introduces skills slowly and thoroughly in order that lives are never put in danger when attempting rescues. There are many opportunities within the programme to take a variety of awards.

Although most of the club's activities take place at Fore Street Pool, the more experienced members have the opportunity to train and take awards in open water, i.e. the sea (usually at Felixstowe Beach).

Since the majority of accidents and drowning take place in the cold hostile environment of open water, the club views this kind of training as vital and a natural progression from pool training.

Members of the club also have the opportunity to compete in competitions at club, local, regional and national levels. It views competitions as a healthy and enjoyable way of raising standards in lifesaving.

By achieving Clubmark, Ipswich Life Saving Club has demonstrated that it meets nationally-recognised standards, and provides a safe and positive learning environment in which members can develop their skills.

A presentation of the certificate, marking the award to the Club and other local clubs, took place at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich on 19 October. This was presented by Nigel Moore of Sport England and was also attended by representatives from Suffolk Sport and Ipswich Borough Council.

In order to be awarded Clubmark status, the Club had to complete a comprehensive assessment file, containing evidence that the required standards were met. This includes confirmation that all the Club’s trainers are properly qualified and up-to-date so that students receive the best possible training.
